Commencing with a list of Council members present: Henry Edward Armstrong; Henry Bowman Brady; Charles Baron Clarke; Michael Foster; William Huggins; John Whitaker Hulke; John Wesley Judd; Edward Emanuel Klein; Edwin Ray Lankester; Herbert McLeod; William Pole; William Henry Preece; John William Strutt, Lord Rayleigh; Henry Enfield Roscoe; Edward John Routh; Arthur Rucker; The Treasurer [John Evans]; William James Lloyd Wharton; the President, George Gabriel Stokes, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Deaths of Warren de la Rue, Robert McDonnell and Robert Stirling Newall. Request for funds from Parliament of £1,600 to be made by the Treasury on behalf of the Challenger Committee, to complete the expedition report, a letter of reply drafted by the Secretary. The balance of £38 from the Government Grant awarded to the late Warren de la Rue to be used to continue his Sunspot observations. Report of the Government Grant Committee read and approved: lists of members of Boards B-G, grant totals and applications for £50 from S. U. Pickering, P. F. Frankland and C. A. Ballance and S. Shattock to be met from £500 reserve. £50 from the Donation Fund to Joseph Dalton Hooker to pay an artist illustrating a monograph on orchids. Letter from A. Sedgwick suggesting the sale of spare specimens of Peripatus embyros left over from his researches, Council determining that these should be distributed free of charge, the cost defrayed by the Society. Letter from P. M. Duncan on Echinoidea and Ophiuroidea collected in voyages of H.M.S Porcupine and H.M.S. Lightning referred to the Challenger Committee. Names of candidates suggested for the award of Copley, Royal and Davy Medals. Suggestions of names for election as Foreign Members listed, a selection to be made at a later meeting. Presentation of 'Annals of the House of Percy' by the Duke of Northumberland, thanks given. Publication of the Challenger Report, Zoology vol.30. Leave granted for electrotype copies of illustrations and other copying. Estimate from Lindfield to paint and paper two rooms at £8.5s. accepted. Bills for lighting and gas.
