Commencing with a list of Council members present: William Wivesley Abney; William Henry Mahoney Christie; George Howard Darwin; Warren De La Rue; Robert Etheridge; Sir Frederick John Owen Evans; William Henry Flower; George Carey Foster; Michael Foster; Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker; Henry Nottidge Moseley; Hugo Muller; Andrew Noble; John William Strutt, Lord Rayleigh; John Scott Burdon Sanderson; George Gabriel Stokes; Lieutenant-General Richard Strachey; James Joseph Sylvester; Alexander William Williamson; the Treasurer [Sir John Evans] in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: announcement of the decease of William Pole. A request to nominate an almoner for Christ's Hospital. A report of the House and Soiree Committee on room use and Library use recommendations, with resulting changes to Statutes, A report of the Library and Catalogue Committee with recommendations on journals exchange and a copy of the Catalogue of Scientific Papers to be made available to George James Symons. A request from the Linnaean Society to defray the costs of illustration of Whitman's Land Leeches of Japan, turned down by Council. Mr. Warburton's will and gathering of evidence by Mr. Few. Various publishing matters and printing bills.
