Commencing with a list of Council members present: Henry Edward Armstrong; William Edward Ayrton; Charles Baron Clarke; William Boyd Dawkins; Michael Foster; Archibald Geikie; Edward Emanuel Klein; Edwin Ray Lankester; Hugo Muller; Alfred Newton; Andrew Noble; John William Strutt, Lord Rayleigh; Sir Henry Enfield Roscoe; Edward John Routh; Sir William Scovell Savory; Joseph John Thomson; The Treasurer [John Evans]; Alexander William Williamson; Sir Charles William Wilson; the President, Sir George Gabriel Stokes, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Deaths of William Lewis Ferdinand Fischer, Field Marshall Lord Napier of Magdala and the Rev. Stephen Joseph Perry. Agreement to elect W. H. M. Christie to Council to replace the late S. J. Perry. Letters from new Foreign Members read. Treasurer's report on receiving £2,000 from the Treasury on account of the Government Grant and £800 for the Challenger Report, lodged with the Society's bankers; stock and consol investments for the Fee Reduction Fund, the Rumford Fund and the Scientific Relief Fund. Society for the Houseless Poor and the Society of Antiquaries, with the Royal Society, to apply to Chancery to change terms of investment of the Stevenson Fund. Thomas de Gray, Lord Walsingham to be appointed a Trustee of the Lawes Agricultural Trust. Lists of Government Grant Committee Boards A-G. Professor G. C. Foster asked to chair Board B during General Strachey's absence overseas, letter from Strachey suggesting Francis Galton as his temporary replacement as Meteorological Council chair, approved. Statement by Sir Henry Roscoe on the teaching of science in elementary schools postponed for discussion. Croonian Lecture to be delivered by Professor Marshall Ward. Charles Davidson request to use the Catalogue of Scientific Papers to compile a list of papers on seismology approved. Chemical Society application for Philosophical Transactions B referred to the Library Committee. Letter from the Meteorological Office regarding publication of J. Allan Broun's observations deferred. Letter from the General Post Office on parcel instructions. Publication of the Challenger Report, Physics vol.2. Leave granted to requests for publication and electrotype copying. Letter from the Astronomer Royal recommending entrusting the Cook chronometers to Mr. Poole, who now has them. Bills for publishing, lithography, engraving and other charges.
