Commencing with a list of Council members present: Henry Edward Armstrong; William Edward Ayrton; William Henry Mahoney Christie; Charles Baron Clarke; William Boyd Dawkins; Michael Foster; Edward Emanuel Klein; Edwin Ray Lankester; Hugo Muller; Alfred Newton; Andrew Noble; John William Strutt, Lord Rayleigh; Edward John Routh; Sir William Scovell Savory; Joseph John Thomson; The Treasurer [John Evans]; Alexander William Williamson; Sir Charles William Wilson; the President, Sir George Gabriel Stokes, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Letter from Few & Company on consent to reinvest for the Stevenson Bequest. Report that Mr. Long intended to pay off his mortgage to the Society, referred to the Treasurer. A design by Allan Wyon for the Darwin Medal referred to the Darwin Fund Committee. Regulations for the administration of the Darwin Fund. Application from Mr. Common to photograph Newton's telescope; offer of two 20-inch mirrors with equatorial mounts accepted. President left to nominate a representative to celebrations at Montpellier University. The Foreign Secretary asked to reply to an invitation from the Societe Imperiale Mineralogique de St. Petersburg. Letter of thanks from the University of Toronto, for books and expressions of sympathy. £10 10s., from the Donation Fund, allocated to Mr Downing to aid in computing the orbit of Juno. Donation Fund application from Professor Ramsay deferred. Leave granted to Louisa Wren to copy portraits of Christopher Wren and John Smeaton. Selection of candidates for election at the Annual Meeting listed, the list to be communicated to The Times and Nature. Estimate from Eyre and Spottiswoode for binding manuscripts in vellum, accepted. Bills for binding and printing.
