Commencing with a list of Council members present: Henry Edward Armstrong; William Edward Ayrton; William Henry Mahoney Christie; Charles Baron Clarke; William Boyd Dawkins; Michael Foster; Archibald Geikie; Edward Emanuel Klein; Edwin Ray Lankester; Hugo Muller; Alfred Newton; John William Strutt, Lord Rayleigh; Sir Henry Enfield Roscoe; Edward John Routh; Sir William Scovell Savory; Joseph John Thomson; The Treasurer [John Evans]; Alexander William Williamson; Sir Charles William Wilson; the President, Sir George Gabriel Stokes, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Letter from the India Office relating to the publication of meteorological observations by J. Allan Broun, the Government of India to be consulted. Reply from the Meteorological Council regarding Professor Grant's application for £300, the Secretary to write to Grant accordingly. Professor Ayrton added to the Electric Lighting Committee. Report of the Sub-committee on Russian transliteration, recommending the adoption of the system used by the British Museum Catalogue, a copy to be acquired. Two sums of £100 from the Scientific Relief Fund to be placed with Mr. Carruthers and Dr. Geikie, for the benefit of applicants. Report of the Catalogue Committee recommending a conference to discuss the production of a general subject index of scientific literature. Report of the Chelsea Physic Garden Committee, noting the receipt of a letter from Messrs. Lee & Pembertons and requesting that Dr. Masters be added to the committee, adopted. Application of Mr. Symons for a grant from the Donation Fund for his Brontometer, Symons advised to apply to the Government Grant Committee. £30 from the Donation Fund granted to Professor Tait for an investigation of the duration on impact, to be taken from the £500 reserve. Letter from the Decimal Association requesting that the Society urge Government to adopt the decimal system, the Society unable to comply. Letter from Sir William Bowman suggesting that the obituary of Professor Donders be illustrated with the portrait by G. F. Watts, at Bowman's expense; adopted but with costs borne by the Royal Society. Letter from Sir Joseph Hooker offering a wax medallion of J. Rennell, formerly the property of Sir Henry Yule, accepted. Extension of admission granted to the Rev. A. M. Norman. The constitution of the Imperial Institute presented, one governor to be appointed by the Royal Society. Sir Robert Ball added to the list of potential Royal medallists, further consideration of the awards deferred. Permissions granted to copy, consult and electrotype papers. Bill for engraving.
