Commencing with a list of Council members present: Henry Edward Armstrong; William Edward Ayrton; William Henry Mahoney Christie; Charles Baron Clarke; William Boyd Dawkins; Michael Foster; Archibald Geikie; Edward Emanuel Klein; Hugo Muller; Alfred Newton; Andrew Noble; John William Strutt, Lord Rayleigh; Edward John Routh; Sir William Scovell Savory; Joseph John Thomson; The Treasurer [John Evans]; Alexander William Williamson; Sir Charles William Wilson; the President, Sir George Gabriel Stokes, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Deaths of Samuel Husbands Beckles, Dr. James Matthews Duncan, Dr. Charles Handfield Jones, Robert William Mylne and Professor William Kitchen Parker. Letter from the Committee of the Hanover Exhibition read, requesting the loan of paintings and objects: pictures of Sir Joseph Banks, Martin Folkes, the Earl of Macclesfield and Sir Hans Sloane to be lent. Stock purchased on behalf of the Joule Memorial Fund. £15,000 on Mr. Long's mortgage not yet received; £3,200 to be lent to the Duke of Norfolk on mortgage of Littlehampton properties, the remainder unassigned; mortgage approved and the balance to be lodged with the Society's bankers. Notice to quit received from Mr. Howard at Mablethorpe, but an allowance of £10 to be made to aid Howard. Letter from Few & Company to the Herbert Rix, 30 July 1890, entered in full in the minutes, on changes in investments for the Stevenson Bequest, the seal of the Society affixed to a power of attorney. Application by Mr. Thiselton Dyer on behalf of Gustav Mann for £100 from the Government Grant reserve, to act as botanist to the Delimitation Commission in Sierra Leone. Bruce Joy given permission to take an impression from the Davy Medal die. Bronze copies of Royal Society medals to be struck for the Society's medals cabinet. Adjudication of medals considered and adjourned. Nominations of new Fellows to Council considered and adjourned, retiring Council members listed. Report of the Meteorological Council received, a copy to be sent to the Treasury. Leave granted for various copies of papers and electrotypes of illustrations. Bills for printing, engraving, lithography and other goods and services.
