Commencing with a list of Council members present: William Edward Ayrton; William Henry Mahoney Christie; William Boyd Dawkins; Michael Foster; Archibald Geikie; James Whitbread Lee Glaisher; Hugo Muller; Alfred Newton; John William Strutt, Lord Rayleigh; Sir William Roberts; William Chandler Roberts-Austen; Edward Albert Schafer; Sir George Gabriel Stokes; Joseph John Thomson; Thomas Edward Thorpe; The Treasurer, Sir John Evans; Sir William Turner; Sydney Howard Vines; General James Thomas Walker; the President, Sir William Thomson, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Sir William Turner subscribed to the declaration in lieu of the oath. Death of George Leveson-Gower, Earl Granville. £15,000 received by the Treasurer in repayment of Mr. Long's mortgage, £3,200 advanced to the Duke of Norfolk's mortgage, £12,000 on deposit; the seal of the Society affixed to Norfolk's Littlehampton property mortgage. Seal affixed to an address to the Privy Council on the bill for Registration of Learned Societies. £100, £50 and £30 from the Scientific Relief Fund to be placed with Dr Geikie, Mr. G. H. Morton and Mr. Stone, for applicants. Selection of candidates for Fellowship discussed and adjourned.
