Commencing with a list of Council members present: William Edward Ayrton; William Henry Mahoney Christie; Michael Foster; Archibald Geikie; James Whitbread Lee Glaisher; Hugo Muller; John William Strutt, Lord Rayleigh; William Chandler Roberts-Austen; Edward Albert Schafer; Sir George Gabriel Stokes; General Richard Strachey; Joseph John Thomson; Thomas Edward Thorpe; The Treasurer, Sir John Evans; Sydney Howard Vines; General James Thomas Walker; the President, Sir William Thomson, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Deaths of Peter Martin Duncan and Sir John Hawkshaw. Letter from the Treasury, the German Government providing 15 copies of 'Die Koniglichen Observatorien', for distribution, a list of recipients to be drawn up. Letter from the Charity Organisation Society, requesting a grant for an inquiry into the 'feeble-minded and epileptic', refused. Letter of thanks from the Pharmaceutical Society for an address. Treasurer authorised to pay the annual contribution of a Fellow from the Scientific Relief Fund. Permission granted to J, B. Lawes and Dr. Gilbert to purchase 75 and 100 copies of Philosophical Transactions numbers. Annual report of the Meteorological Council presented. Advertisement of 'Professor Harley Parker F.R.S.' noted, the Secretary to write to the papers, saying that no Fellow of that name existed. Consideration of draft statutes concluded, the full draft to be read at a subsequent meeting. List of candidates for Royal Society medals, with proposers and seconders. Leave granted for electrotypes of illustrations. Treasurer's report on the conversion of stock. Treasurer authorised to spend funds during the recess, for Library redecoration, a case for manuscripts, and glazing and cleaning of paintings. Bills for lithography and for the purchase of Mr. Muybridge's album from Lippincott & Company.
