Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Deaths of Philip Herbert Carpenter and William Henry Smith. Letter from the Admiralty on the selection of Mr. A. M. W. Downing to succeed Mr. Hinds as Superintendent of the Nautical Alamanac. Letter from London County Council agreeing to conditions for the investigation of pathogens in the water supply; the committee having met the inquiry was now in progress. Letter from the Standards Department, the decennial comparison ot Parliamentary copies of the standard yard and pound now due, the items to be delivered to the Standards Department; this now done. Applications for publications referred to the Library Committee. The British Institute for Preventative Medicine had now been granted a licence, a letter of thanks read and leave granted to the Institute to meet in the Society's rooms. Letters of congratulation from the Royal Society to Professors Helmholtz and Virchow entered into the minutes in full. Draft preface to the forthcoming volume of the Catalogue of Scientific Papers read and approved after amendment. Portraits loan request received for a forthcoming Victorian Exhibition, picture of J. P. Joule to be lent, and others that might be glazed for less than £15. Text of a draft bond of Robert Halliday Gunning entered into the minutes in full, funds to be used for physical and biological sciences, approved. Adjudication of medals adjourned. List of retiring Council members, with proposals of new members, postponed until the next meeting. List of suggestions for new Foreign Members, to be brought before Council in November when four candidates would be selected. Old statutes repealed, new statutes in force, omission of two Council meetings next year. Treasurer's report on ground rents in the City, further inquiries to be made. Potsdam Observatory volumes now distributed. Report of the Meteorological Council presented, one copy to the Treasury. Extension on admission to the Fellowship granted to George M. Dawson. Electrotypes of illustrations and other copying requests granted. Treasurer authorised to pay a grant from the Scientific Relief Fund. Bills for printing, lithography, Library books and other goods and services. |
