Commencing with a list of Council members present: William Thomas Blanford; George Carey Foster; Michael Foster; Sir Archibald Geikie; James Whitbread Lee Glaisher; Frederick Ducane Godman; John Hopkinson; George Downing Liveing; Joseph Norman Lockyer; Arthur Milnes Marshall; John William Strutt, Lord Rayleigh; Philip Henry Pye-Smith; William Chandler Roberts-Austen; Edward Albert Schafer; The Treasurer, Sir John Evans; Sydney Howard Vines; General James Thomas Walker; the President, Sir William Thomson, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Deaths of H.M. Pedro II, ex-Emperor of Brazil, Professor Wharton Jones and Sir Andrew C. Ramsay. New Council members subscribed to the declaration in lieu of the oath. Appointment of Vice-Presidents. Re-appointment of committees wiith lists of members: the Library Committee, Soiree and House Committee, Electric Lighting Committee, Catalogue of Scientific Papers Committee, Challenger Committee, Colour-Vision Committee, Mountain Observatory Committee, Water Research Committee, Joule Fund Committee. Professors Lockyer and Meldola appointed to the Scientific Relief Committee. New edition of statutes in print and sent to all Fellows and Foreign Members. Seal of the Society affixed to diplomas of new Foreign Members and to a form of corporate designation for stock-holding, sent to the Bank of England. Treasury payment of £2,000 as the Government Grant. Treasurer's report on stock received. Repair of dangerous skylight in the Library. Large bill for printing received after October paid by the Treasurer. £40 from the Donation Fund granted to Dr Woodward to assist Dr. Hinde in illustrating his memoir on New Zealand fossil sponge remains. £100 from the residue of the Government Grant Fund awarded to Mr. W. M. Conway for an expedition to the Karakoram Mountains. Application from the Liverpool Naval Exhibition for the loan of the portrait of Samuel Pepys declined. Report of the Mountain Observatory Committee, granting the loan of Dr. Main's telescope once completed by Mr. H. Grubb. Report of the Catalogue Committee deferred after discussion. Professor A. Mosso's acceptance of the Croonian Lecture. Meteorological Council incorporated. Superintendent of the Kew Observatory's request for a license under the Companies' Act referred to the Treasurer. Request from Mr. Scott that unbound copies of Smyth's History of the Royal Society Club be offered to members, granted. Draft regulations for the conduct of Ordinary Meetings considered and postponed. Letter of thanks from Professor Helmholtz. Permissions for copying of papers. Salaries of Mr. James and Mr. White to be raised by £10 per annum. to £180; salary of Mr. Richard Chapman to be raised by £10 to £90 per annum. Bill from Johnson Matthey & Company for medals and bill for the Anniversary Dinner.
