Commencing with a list of Council members present: Captain William de Wiveleslie Abney; William Thomas Blanford; George Carey Foster; Michael Foster; Sir Archibald Geikie; James Whitbread Lee Glaisher; Frederick Ducane Godman; John Hopkinson; Joseph Norman Lockyer; Arthur Milnes Marshall; John William Strutt, Lord Rayleigh; Philip Henry Pye-Smith; William Chandler Roberts-Austen; Edward Albert Schafer; Sir George Gabriel Stokes; the Treasurer, Sir John Evans; the President, Sir William Thomson, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Captain Abney subscribed to the declaration in lieu of the oath. Deaths of John Couch Adams, George Biddell Airy, Sir James Risdon Bennett, William Duke of Devonshire, William Charles Henry, William Henry Leighton Russell, John Wood, Leopold Kronecker, Jean Louis Armand de Quatrefages de Breau, Jean Servais Stas. List of appointments of two replacement members for retirees from the Government Grant Boards A-G and list of Board Chairs. Professor James Thomson to be invited to give the Bakerian Lecture, on trade winds. Treasurer reported the Kew Committee's request to receive a license under the Companies' Act had received assent with the Royal Society retaining control of the Trust Fund. The chair reputed to have belonged to Sir Isaac Newton had been received from the Executors of Dr. Kerslake. £4,000 stock certificate received. Seal of the Society affixed to a form enabling the receipt of £1 19s. paid into Court by Pearson and Company. Presentation lists, institutional and personal, for copies of the Catalogue of Scientific Papers entered into the minutes. Dividends accruing from the Wintringham Fund ordered to be paid to the Foundling Hospital. Report of the Catalogue Committee discussed, the Secretary to draft a letter on making the compiling of the Cataogue an international matter. £100 from the Donation Fund allocated to Mr. Penrose for his researches on the orientation of ancient Greek temples. Letters of thanks received from newly elected Foreign Members. Leave granted for the copying of papers and electrotypes. Bills for printing, engraving and other goods and services.
