Commencing with a list of Council members present: Andrew Ainslie Common; Andrew Russell Forsyth; Michael Foster; Richard Tetley Glazebrook; Alexander Henry Green; Sir John Kirk; Sir Joseph Lister; Sir John Lubbock; William Davidson Niven; John William Strutt, Lord Rayleigh; John Scott Burdon Sanderson; Adam Sedgwick; Thomas Edward Thorpe; William Augustus Tilden; the Treasurer, Sir John Evans; William Cawthorne Unwin; the President, William Thomson, Lord Kelvin, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Deaths of Sir Samuel White Baker, the Earl of Lovelace, Arthur Milnes Marshall, and Professor Pierre J. van Beneden; with the withdrawal from the Society of Lord Basing. Professor Thorpe subscribed to the declaration in lieu of the oath. Letter on behalf of the Postmaster-General stating that it was not possible to comply with the request concerning the international transmission of natural history specimens. Professor Ramon y Cajal of Madrid had accepted the Croonian Lectureship. Dr Perkin to be asked to deliver the Bakerian Lecture, with Dr. Thorpe as a reserve. Secretary asked to write to the Royal Astronomical Society to inquire about any steps regarding the Total Solar Eclipse of 1896. List of possible Foreign Members from the Suggestions Book, with additional names, to be considered at a subsequent meeting of Council. Lists of new and retiring members of the Government Grant Boards A-G with a list of the Chairs for each Board. Treasurer authorised to purchase stock for the Fee Reduction Fund. Stock transfer for the Joule Fund. 10 guinea gratuity to Mr. G. J. Burch for his memorandum on the subject index to the Catalogue of Scientific Papers. Seal of the Society affixed to an congratulatory address to Sir Henry Gilbert. Grant application by Dr. Woodward on behalf of Dr. Forsyth Major referred to Government Grant Committee Board D. Letter from Francis Galton on appointing a committee for statistical enquiries into measurable characteristics of plants and anmials, a committee appointed for that purpose, with £50 from the Donation Fund. £10 from the Donation Fund to Henry Hicks to enable Mr. J. Lewis Abbottt to continue exploration of the ossiferous fissure near Ightham. Letter from Sir Henry Gilbert with enclosures from Professor Fletcher of Amherst concerning the proposal to make a subject index tot he Catalogue of Scientific Papers. Letter from Sir Archibald Geikie with a communication from Professor Suess on co-operation between European learned societies, deferred. Leave granted to Messrs. Thomas to photograph instruments used by Isaac Newton and others, to produce educational lantern slides. Leave granted to Mr. John Mills of 'Science and Art' to photograph portaits and busts for articles on the history of the Royal Society. Leave granted for electrotypes of illustrations. Mr. Crick recruited as a junior clerk at a salary of £30 per annum. Bills for printing, lithography, books and other expenses.
