Commencing with a list of Council members present: Isaac Bayley Balfour; Andrew Ainslie Common; Andrew Russell Forsyth; Michael Foster; Richard Tetley Glazebrook; Alexander Henry Green; Sir John Kirk; Oliver Joseph Lodge; Sir John Lubbock; William Davidson Niven; John William Strutt, Lord Rayleigh; Thomas Edward Thorpe; William Augustus Tilden; William Cawthorne Unwin; the President, William Thomson, Lord Kelvin, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Dr.Perkin declined the Bakerian Lectureship, Professor Thorpe, with Mr. Rodger, to take his place. List of suggestions for Foreign Members, with a shortlist of six candidates drawn up for ballot at a subsequent meeting of Council. Letter from Clements R. Markham, President, Royal Geographical Society, 1 Saville Row, Burlington Gardens, 20 February to the Secretaries of the Royal Society, full text entered into the minutes; proposing a joint expedition to the Antarctic, a committee appointed to consider the subject. Government Grant Committee Board D did not consider the application from Dr. Forsyth Major to be urgent and therefore it would be treated in the normal way; Mr. Boyce's grant request now also treated as an ordinary application. Report of the International Catalogue Committee, requesting authorisation to contact other societies with a view to international co-operation in the production of catalogues, adopted and a draft letter approved. House and Soiree Committee report on conversazione dates and expenses of £140, with a recommendation to improve the tea room at a cost of up to £50, approved and a committee formed to carry out alterations. Sums allocated for applicants to the Scientific Relief Fund: £150 placed with Professor Liveing for an applicant, £20 with Dr. Tilden, £30 with Professor Perkin, £50 with Sir W. Flower, £20 with Captain Abney and £50 with Professor Stewart. Professor Thorpe added to the Catalogue Committee and Sir Archibald Geikie and Oliver Lodge to the Procedure Committee. Dr. Buchan and Sir Archibald Geikie re-appointed to the Government Grant Committee. £30 from the Donation Fund awarded to Professor G. H. Darwin for work on periodic orbits. Discussion of claims of candidates for the Fellowship to be discussed with a selection of 15 candidates for Council on 10 May. Indexing of Philosophical Transactions and Proceedings prepared by Mr. White, Librarian of the Philosophical Society of Cambridge, offered for printing and accepted. Leave granted to Professor Prestwich to republish papers. Leave granted for electrotype copies of illustrations. Bills for printing, engraving, lithography and other expenses.
