Commencing with a list of Council members present: Isaac Bayley Balfour; Andrew Ainslie Common; Andrew Russell Forsyth; Michael Foster; Richard Tetley Glazebrook; Alexander Henry Green; Sir John Kirk; Sir Joseph Lister; Oliver Joseph Lodge; William Davidson Niven; William Henry Perkin; John William Strutt, Lord Rayleigh; John Scott Burdon Sanderson; Adam Sedgwick; Thomas Edward Thorpe; William Augustus Tilden; the Treasurer, Sir John Evans; William Cawthorne Unwin; the President, William Thomson, Lord Kelvin, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Deaths of H.R.H. Louis Philippe d'Orleans, Count of Paris, Rev. William Bentinck Latham Hawkins, Admiral Sir Edward Augustus Inglefield, William Topley, Charles R. Alder Wright, and Professor Hermann Ludwig Ferdinand von Helmholtz. Adjudication of medals discussed and adjourned. Nomination of Fellows for the next Council discussed and retiring Council Members listed, adjourned. Report that the deputation to the First Lord of the Admiralty, to discuss an Antarctic Expedition, was not well received. Anniversary Dinner to be held as usual at the Whitehall Rooms. Extension for admission to the Fellowship extended indefinitely for Oliver Heaviside. £40 from the Donation Fund granted to Captain Abney for researches on colour and £20 to Professor Hicks for experiments on the higher recalescence point of iron. Leave granted to Mr. Tutton to republish two papers. Report of the Library Committee: arrangments for publishing single papers from Philosophical Transactions should be transferred from Kegan Paul & Company to Dalau & Company; lists of exchanges of Royal Society publications, report adopted. Seal of the Royal Society affixed to a document on the receipt of dividends from consols for the Buchanan Medal Fund. Resolution to sell stock to the value of £1,000 to meet the excess costs of Royal Society publications. £10 from the Scientific Relief Fund paid to Professor Flower for the benefit of an applicant. Report of the Meteorological Council to be forwarded to the Treasury. Notes on representatives to international congresses, including a report by Professors Poytning and Boys. Application from Columbia College for the Philosophical Transactions referred to the Library Committee; application for the same from Mr. C. Chambers granted. Leave granted for copying and photography from the archives. Letters of thanks from the University of California, from Owens College and J. D. Chorlton and from Archdeacon Farrar on behalf of Mary Brookes tabled. Return of the Imperial Yard and Pound reported. Bills for printing, engraving, lithography and for other expenses.
