Commencing with a list of Council members present: Alexander Crum Brown; Michael Foster; Sir Archibald Geikie; George Downing Liveing; Joseph Norman Lockyer; John William Strutt, Lord Rayleigh; William Chandler Roberts-Austen; Edward Albert Schafer; Sir George Gabriel Stokes; the Treasurer, Sir John Evans; Sydney Howard Vines; General James Thomas Walker; the President, William Thomson, Lord Kelvin, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Letter from Sir Henry Ponsonby read, giving the Queen's approval for the award of Royal medals. Report on the audit of Treasurer's accounts, including the purchase of Westwood House for the Meteorological Office. Extension of time for admission to the Fellowship granted to Captain Hutton. Letters of thanks from medal winners. Return of income tax deducted from stocks and shares. Seal of the Society affixed to power of attorney for the sale of consols and stocks; and to a congratulatory address to the University of Padua. Letter from the Joint Eclipse Committee noting the three locations in Senegambia offered by the French Government as observation sites and the selection of Foundoum on the Saloum River, the Secretary to write to the Foreign Office with this information. List of salaries, pensions and wages paid to Officers and staff.
