Commencing with a list of Council members present: Andrew Ainslie Common; William Crookes; Michael Foster; Sir Douglas Galton; Sir John Kirk; Sir Joseph Lister; John William Strutt, Lord Rayleigh; Arthur William Rucker; Osbert Salvin; John Scott Burdon Sanderson; Thomas Edward Thorpe; William Henry White; the Treasurer, Sir John Evans, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted, continuing from the previously adjourned meeting. Death of Dr. Bisset Hawke. Letter from the Imperial Russian Geographical Society requesting an opinion on a memorandum by Rear-Admiral Makaroff referred to the Meteorological Committee. Letter from Mr. Thiselton Dyer covering a Kew Bulletin account of Theodore Bent's expedition to Southern Arabia. Lord Rayleigh statement on the discovery, with Professor Ramsay, of a new gas; paper to be read and discussed on 31 January. Re-appointment of Dr. Buchan, Sir Archibald Geikie, the Earl of Rosse and Professor Macalister to the Government Grant Committee. £2,000 for the Government Grant paid into the account with the Society's bankers. Sale of stock for the Scientific Relief Fund. Philosophical Transactions for 1888 granted to the President. Bill for the Anniverary Dinner from the Gordon Hotels Company.
