Commencing with a list of Council members present: Thomas George Bonney; Andrew Ainslie Common; William Crookes; Francis Darwin; Andrew Russell Forsyth; Michael Foster; Sir Douglas Galton; Horace Lamb; Edwin Ray Lankester; Sir Joseph Lister; John Henry Poynting; John William Strutt, Lord Rayleigh; Arthur William Rucker; Osbert Salvin; John Scott Burdon Sanderson; Thomas Edward Thorpe; the Treasurer, Sir John Evans; the President, William Thomson, Lord Kelvin, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Professor Bonney subscribed to the declaration in lieu of the oath. Death of Franz Ernst Neumann. Statement from the Senior Secretary on his contact with the Permanent Secretary of the Treasury on the subject of grant in aid of publication, a letter to be composed to the Treasury. Letter from Dr. Pavey alleging unfairness to him in a paper by Dr. Noel Paton, a reply to be considered. £50 from the Donation Fund to be allocated to Dr. Burdon Sanderson to assist Dr. V. Harley in research on absorption in the alimentary canal; £25 to Professor H. Dixon to assist Drs. Strange and Graham in research on combustion of cyanogen and oxygen. Letter from the Kew Committee in response to Mr. Primrose on amendments to its name, Mr. Few to be consulted. Applications from Mr. Buchan and from Professor Hartley for £100 each, referred to the Chairman of Board B. Permission given to Rev. H. J. Carter to have a copy made of the Society's portrait of Martin Folkes. Selection of Foreign Members deferred. Lists of suggested names for the award of Royal Society medals, proposing and seconding to take place at a future meeting. Letter from Professor Seeley proposing that Cape specimens collected with aid from the Government Grant should be presented to the British Museum, with casts provided for two main museums in Africa. Sir William Flower and Professor Hickson to represent the Society at the International Congress of Zoology in Leiden. £2,000 received from the Paymaster-General for the Government Grant Fund. Leave granted to re-publish illustrations. Treasurer authorised to purchase 20 tons of house coal. Bills for printing, lithography and other expenses.
