Commencing with a list of Council members present: Michael Foster; Edward Frankland; Walter Holbrook Gaskell; William Huggins; Alexander Blackie William Kennedy; Horace Lamb; Edwin Ray Lankester; Charles Lapworth; Major Percy Alexander MacMahon; John Henry Poynting; John William Strutt, Lord Rayleigh; Arthur William Rucker; Osbert Salvin; the Treasurer, Sir John Evans; Harry Marshall Ward; Admiral William James Lloyd Wharton; the President, Sir Joseph Lister, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Death of Dr. John Russell Hind. Appointment of two members of each Government Grant Board, listed with retiring members and elections of chairmen for each Board. Amendment to the Standing Order on Sectional Committees proposed by Professor Lamb relating to the Mathematical Committee, passed. Appointments to Sectional Committees: Mathematical Committee; Physical and Chemical Committee; Geological Committee; Botanical Committee (appointment deferred); Zoological Committee; and the Physiological Committee. Professor Edgeworth Smith appointed to the Coral Reef Committee and Professor Weldon to the International Catalogue Committee. Professor Lippmann reported to have accepted the invitation to open the colour photography discussion meeting. Dr. Thorpe's resignation from the governing body of Christ's Hospital, Professor Armstrong elected in his place. Report of the Assistant Secretary Appointment Committee, recommending Robert W. F. Harrison to the post, appointment confirmed. Letter and enclosures from Lieutenant-Colonel A. O. Green, on borings in the Nile Dalta, referred to a committee appointed for the purpose. Professor Roberts-Austen appointed Bakerian Lecturer, the subject 'Diffusion of Metals'. Dr. Gaskell and the Senior Secretary to make arrangements with Dr. Waller , the Croonian Lecturer. Seal of the Society affixed to diplomas of Foreign Members and to stock transfers for the Darwin Medal Fund. Treasurer's report on stock for the Darwin Madel Fund and the Joule Memorial Fund. Funds accruing to the Winteringham Fund to be paid to the Foundling Hospital. Disused electric lantern to be sold. Dr. Buchan and Sir Archibald Geikie re-appointed to the Government Grant Committee. Bills for paper, engraving and other expenses.
