Commencing with a list of Council members present: Lazarus Fletcher; Michael Foster; Edward Frankland; Walter Holbrook Gaskell; William Huggins; Alexander Blackie William Kennedy; Edwin Ray Lankester; Charles Lapworth; Major Percy Alexander MacMahon; John Henry Poynting; John William Strutt, Lord Rayleigh; Arthur William Rucker; Osbert Salvin; the Treasurer, Sir John Evans; Admiral William James Lloyd Wharton; the President, Sir Joseph Lister, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Death of General James Thomas Walker. Letter from the Secretary of State for Home Affairs acknowledging the letter of condolence sent to the Queen. Letter from the Secretary of the Admiralty, promising assistance to the Japan total eclipse expedition. Draft of a letter to the Director of the British Museum approved, on the disposal of plants from Mr. Scott-Elliott. Report of the House and Soiree Committee recommending dates and expenditure on conversaziones. An informal gathering of Fellows agreed for 19 March. Government Grant Boards to meet on 7 May. Report of the Delta Boring Committee recommending a letter to the War Office requesting one boring to be made down to the solid rock in Egypt; and additions to the committee. Draft letter to the French Academy of Sciences approved, on the forthcoming election of a student of the Joule Trust. Regulations for the administration of the Publications Grant approved, full text entered into the minutes. Letter from Sir William Flower asking to be excused from the Sectional Commitee on Zoology, Alexander Macalister to be appointed in his place. Draft of changes to the Government Grant regulations proposed. £100 from the Donation Fund granted to the Marine Biological Association for the purchase of a steam yacht for trawling; £50 to Mr. A. Gamgee for researches in haemoglobin and ultraviolet light; £150 to the Coral Reef Committee for the purchase of diamonds. Resolved to grant the Coral Reef Committee £250 from the Government Grant £500 reserve fund, Treasurer authorised to advance £250 of this. Dr. Waller's Croonian Lecture arranged for 12 March. £50 from the Publication Fund awarded to the Entomological Society for the publication of Professor Williston's 'Diptera of the Island of St. Vincent'. Letter from the Committee formed to celebrate the 70th year of Professor S. Cannizzaro, a congratulatory leter to be sent. Letters from the President of a Committee to erect a monument to Louis Pasteur in Paris and for a monument at Dole, 100 francs to be subscribed to each. Letter from M. Appell stating that a portrait was being commissioned for M. Mittag-Leffler's 51st birthday, agreed to subscribe 100 francs. Letter from the Russian National Health Society on Edward Jenner, consideration postponed. Letter from Professor McKendrick stating that the use of his name in an advertisement had been without his permission. Purchase of microscope projection apparatus for the electric lantern at £50. Letter of thanks for election as a Foreign Member from S. P. Langley. Letter from the Director of the Science and Art Department inviting contributions to a loan collection of English furniture, an officer to be invited to the Society rooms to inspect possible items for exhibition. Leave granted for electrotypes. Special meeting of Council to be held on 5 March to consider proposed Standing Orders, Mr. A. B. Kempe invited to be present. Bills for printing and engraving.
