Commencing with a list of Council members present: William Crookes; Sir Joseph Fayrer; Lazarus Fletcher; Michael Foster; Edward Frankland; Walter Holbrook Gaskell; William Huggins; Alexander Blackie William Kennedy; Edwin Ray Lankester; Charles Lapworth; Major Percy Alexander MacMahon; John Henry Poynting; John William Strutt, Lord Rayleigh; Arthur William Rucker; Osbert Salvin; the Treasurer, Sir John Evans; Harry Marshall Ward; Admiral William James Lloyd Wharton; the President, Sir Joseph Lister, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Deaths of Sir George Johnson, Sir John Russell Reynolds and Professor Gabriel Auguste Daubree. Senior Secretary noted urgent letters to the Admiralty on the coming eclipse, approved. Letter from the Secretary of the Admiralty promising assistance to Dr. G. H. Fowler in exploration off the Orkney Islands. Letter from the Science and Art Department requesting permission to exhibit splash photographs by Messrs. Worthington and Cole and to take photographs of historical furniture lent by the Society, granted. £2,000 received from Paymaster General on account of the Government Grant. Letter from the Physical Society requesting assistance for publications, £50 granted to assist in publishing abstracts of foreign papers. Letter from Dr. Ferrers stating that Cambridge University Press would publish Mr. A. McAuley's paper on Octonions with support, £50 granted for the purpose from the Publication Fund. Letter received from Mr. Caldwell before the Society's solicitor had been consulted, no further action to be taken at present. Application from Archibald Garrod referred to the Chairman of Board G. £50 from the Donation Fund awarded to Professors Fleming and Dewar for researches on diamagnetic qualities of metals at low temperatures. Letter from Professor F. O. Bower declining to make changes to his paper on Ophioglossaceae, and asking to copy it in order to publish it at his own expense, granted. Adjudication of medals: proposal of Professor Lapworth's for a classified list of Royal Society medal winners to be drawn up, rejected; list of proposed candidates for medals, to be proposed and seconded at a later meeting. Offer of a portrait of Richard Owen for sale by Willett and Sandford, declined. Leave granted for copies of illustrations. Bills for engraving and conversazione ices.
