Commencing with a list of Council members present: Captain William de Wiveleslie Abney; Sir Benjamin Baker; Isaac Bayley Balfour; William Thomas Blanford; George Carey Foster; Michael Foster; Sir Archibald Geikie; Richard Tetley Glazebrook; John Hopkinson; Joseph Norman Lockyer; William Davidson Niven; William Henry Perkin; John William Strutt, Lord Rayleigh; Adam Sedgwick; William Augustus Tilden; the Treasurer, Sir John Evans; the President, William Thomson, Lord Kelvin, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved. Death of Edward Walker. Letter from the Foreign Office, promising that the Brazil Eclipse Expedition would have Customs facilities; and a letter from the Admiralty promising suitable ships to convey the Senegambia Eclipse Expedition from Bathurst to the Salum River and back, and from Bathurst to Teneriffe. Letter from the Registrar of the Royal College of Physicians, noting the behaviour of a Fellow asking physicians for paid opinions in law courts; the President to speak with the Fellow privately. Permission granted to R. W. Stewart to have copies of his paper. Second report of the Water Research Committee presented and ordered to be printed in Proceedings and copies sent to London County Council. Government Grant Boards to meet on 11 May. 100 francs subscribed to the memorials to Lobatcheffsky and Stas. Assistant Secretary advised to leave London on Saturday and Sunday on medical grounds, approved. Cheque for £2,000 received from Ludwig Mond for the Catalogue of Scientific Papers. Certificate of consols received for the Scientific Relief Fund. Treasurer authorised to buy a miniature painting of Samuel Horsley for 10 guineas; also authorised to pay no more than £30 for a new hall and stair carpet and rods. £5 gratuity to the gate porter on his approaching retirement. Secretary to return thanks to London University for the use of the theatre in delivering the Croonian Lecture. Letter of thanks from the University of Padua. Bills for printing, engraving and lithography.
