Commencing with a list of Council members present: William Grylls Adams; Thomas Clifford Allbutt; Robert Bellamy Clifton; James Alfred Ewing; Lazarus Fletcher; Michael Foster; Edward Frankland; William Holbrook Gaskell; William Huggins; Charles Lapworth; Major Percy Alexander MacMahon; Raphael Meldola; William Ramsay; Arthur William Rucker; William Turner Thiselton-Dyer; the Treasurer, Sir John Evans; Thomas de Grey, Lord Walsingham; Walter Frank Raphael Weldon; Admiral William James Lloyd Wharton; the President, Lord Lister, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved.
1. Death of Sir Augustus Wollaston Franks, Major-General Robert Mann Parsons and Professor Julius von Sachs.
2. Congratulatory address to H.M. the Queen signed by the President and the Royal Society seal affixed.
3. Grant of £80 from the Publication Fund awarded to Mr. F. McClean to aid in illustrations for his paper in Philosophical Transactions.
4. Following a report by the Senior Secretary, £100 from the Publication Fund awarded to aid the publication of 'Index Animalium'.
5. Two letters from the Foreign Office relating to the introduction of the Gregorian Calendar in Bulgaria and other Greek Orthodox states and the establishment of a fixed date for Easter; the Secretary to reply on the desirability of such introductions, but that steps lay outside the Society's province.
6. Letter from the Joint Permanent Eclipse Committee, requesting that the Society enlist the aid of the Government of India in the forthcoming Expedition.
7. The relationship between the Sectional Committees and Council on selection of Fellowship candidates postponed to a further Council meeting.
8. Secretary's report that a second coral reef boring expedition had set out from Sydney under the auspices of the Royal Geographical Society of Australasia, who had agreed that a core should be sent to the Royal Society and results reserved for the Society to publish. The Coral Reef Committee recommended that the unexpended balance of funds originally allocated should be applied to the new expedition; agreed, with the Sydney expedition free to publish their findings.
9. Report of the Scientific Relief Committee recommending that the sum of £100 be placed with the President of the Royal Astronomical Society for the benefit of an applicant, approved.
10. Omission of Council Meetings in 1897-98 and election of Fellows to be held on 9 June 1898.
11. Letter from Professor Schafer requesting a Donation Fund grant to assist Mr. Swale Vincent in research on ductless glands, the Secretary to confer with the Chairman of Board G.
12. Request to the Society for a representative on the Joint Scholarships Board, Dr. W. J. Russell recommended.
13. Letter from the Superintendent of the Colaba Observatory on supervision by the Observatories Committee, consideration postponed until the opinion of the Astronomer Royal could be sought.
14. Adjudication of Royal Society Medals, lists of candidates entered into the minutes, to be proposed and seconded at later meetings.
15. Leave granted for copying illustrations.
16. Leave granted to Charles Gassiot to photograph the oil painting by E. Armitage.
17. Bills for printing, binding, collotypes and other other expenses.
