Commencing with a list of Council members present: William Grylls Adams; Thomas Clifford Allbutt; Robert Bellamy Clifton; James Alfred Ewing; Lazarus Fletcher; Sir Edward Frankland; William Holbrook Gaskell; Alfred George Greenhill; Sir William Huggins; Charles Lapworth; Major Percy Alexander MacMahon; Raphael Meldola; William Ramsay; Arthur William Rucker; William Turner Thiselton-Dyer; the Treasurer, Sir John Evans; Walter Frank Raphael Weldon; Admiral William James Lloyd Wharton; the President, Lord Lister, in the chair.

Among matters discussed or noted: minutes of the last meeting read and approved.
1. Deaths of Rev. Dr. Samuel Haughton and Professor Rudolph P. H. Heidenhain.
2. The Astronomer Royal suggested to the Government as a representive to the International Geodetic Association.
3. Report of Professor Edgeworth David on coral boring results from Funafuti and a letter of Professor Anderson Stuart referred to the Coral Boring Committee.
4. Application from Mr. Ogilvie-Grant to repurpose a grant considered, with a report from the Chair of Goverment Grant Board F: the application to be declined, with a view to it being placed before the Government Grant Board in 1898.
5. List of nominations for President, Officers and Fellows to serve as Council from the Anniversary Meeting, to be communicated to the public papers.
6-10. Adjudication of Royal Society medals: Professor Albert von Kolliker (Copley Medal), Professor Andrew Russell Forsyth (Royal Medal), Lieutenant-General Sir Richard Strachey (Royal Medal), Dr. John Hall Gladstone (Davy Medal), Sir John Simon (Buchanan Medal).
11. Draft report to the Society of Council actions amended and adopted.
12. List of salaries and wages paid to Officers and staff.
13. Bills for printing and other expenses.
