DescriptionPrinted minutes containing matters laid before Council, the Royal Society's governing body of Fellows, with records of decisions taken. Individual minutes are numbered.

Commencing with a list of Council members present: Dr. Shelford Bidwell; Sir Thomas Launder Brunton; John Norman Collie; Francis Darwin (Foreign Secretary); Wyndham Rowland Dunstan; John Bretland Farmer; Francis Gotch; Dr. Sydney Frederic Harmer; Sir William Huggins; Alfred Bray Kempe (Treasurer); Joseph Larmor (Secretary); Dr. John Edward Marr; Hugh Frank Newall; Sir William Davidson Niven; John Perry; Ernest Henry Starling; William Augustus Tilden; the President, John William Strutt, 3rd Baron Rayleigh, in the chair. The Assistant Secretary [Robert Harrison] attended.

Among matters discussed or noted:

1. Minutes of the previous meeting were read and signed as correct.
2. Death of Dr. Lionel S. Beale: Dr. Pye Smith or Dr. G.F. Yeo to compose an Obituary Notice.
3. Report of the Catalogue of Scientific Papers Committee, on the extent of classification of biological subjects to be adopted in indexing: the committee recommended the acceptance of the offer from Cambridge University Press on publicaton of an index, with various other recommendations, including that it was not necessary to include lists of new species.
4. Francis Darwin appointed Chairman of the Indian Government Advisory Committee, in place of Sir William Thiselton-Dyer: with a note on submision of draft letters to the Cmmitte Chairman.
5. Letter from J. Smith Whitaker, Medical Secretary, Offices of the British Medical Association, 429 Strand, 4 April 1906, to Professor J. Larmor and Sir Archibald Geikie, full text entered into the minutes: on the statements of the Home Secretary suggesting an enquiry into animal experimentation, with a resolution to be communicated by the Royal Society to the Prime Minister, requesting that any enquiry should be as comprehensive as possible.
6. Letter from Sir Norman Lockyer, suggesting the appointment of a committee for an astronomical survey of ancient British monuments, with a budget of £300, consideration deferred.
7. Professor Larmor's resolutions on publications voted upon and carried.
8. Detailed memorandum on the Royal Society's surplus stock of publications, with suggestions for their disposal.
9. Conditions for the publication of the magnetic survey of South Africa had been met and £600 had been deposited with the Public Works Department, Capetown, for the publication: the Secretary noted the desirability for uniformity of publication with the New Zealand survey and with other territories.
10. The Committee for selecting a Director for an Indian Institute of Science had been unable to agree on a recommendation , but had reduced the list of candidates to two. With a draft letter, Joseph Larmor, 6 April 1906, to the Under Secretary of State for India, full text entered into the minutes: suggesting Professor Wyndham R. Dunstan and Dr. Morris W. Travers for the role.
11. Letter from the Board of Education acknowledging receipt of the Society's letter with regard to the Royal College of Science.
12. Letters of acceptance from nominees to represent the Society at the 200th anniversary celebrations of Benjamin Franklin's birth.
13. Report of the National Physical Laboratory and Statement of Accounts received and ordered to be forwarded to the Treasury.
14. Leave granted for copies of illustrations from journals.
15. List of bills for payment, for printing, law charges and engraving.
