DescriptionC. N. Thompson, was based at the Shell Centre in London during the period of correspondence and also served a term as President of the Royal Institute of Chemistry. The letters cover discussion of Cornforth's and Thompson's works, but also internal Shell adminstrative matters. The correspondence does continue after Cornforth moved to the University of Sussex, with letters asking for Cornforth's opinion on various matters, for example on project proposals being considered by Shell.
