| Citation | Whitworth Scholar. Consulting Electrical Engineer. Member of Council of the Institution of Electrical Engineers and also of the Council of the Physical Society. Has carried out many experimental investigation for electrical-supply undertakings in connection with extra high tension alternating currents, and also in wireless telegraphy for the General Post Office, in conjuction with Mr JE Taylor. Attended for International Electrical Congress at St Louis in 1904 as Honorary Secretary to the delegates of the Institution of Electrical Engineers, and reported on the Congress to the Institution. For his improvements in 'Oscillographs,' which have materially increased the knowledge of alternating current phenomena, he received gold medals at the Paris (1900) and the St Louis Exhibitions. He has made improvements in instruments for measuring small alternating currents, 'Thermogalvanometers,' and invented a method for producing continuous oscillations of any frequency, 'Musical Arc,' which is being successfully applied in wireless telegraphy. Author of the following papers: - 'Oscillographs' (Brit Assoc Meeting, Toronto,1897); 'Experiments on Alternate Current Arcs by aid of Oscillographs' (Inst Elect Eng, 1899, with Dr Marchant), which received the Paris Premium of the Inst Elect Eng; 'On Rapid Variations in the Current through the Direct Current Arc' (Proc Inst Elect Eng, 1900), also awarded a Paris Premium by the Inst Elect Eng; 'On the Resistance and Electromotive Forces of the Electrical Arc' (Proc Roy Soc, 1901and Phil Trans, vol cciii); 'Experiments on Periodic Variations occuring in the Exciting Current of an Inductor Alternator' (Electrician, 1901, with Dr Marchant); 'Musical and Talking Electric Arcs' (Roy Inst Friday Discourse, 1902); 'Some Instruments for the Measurement of Large and Small Alternating Currents' (Phil Mag, 1904); 'Report on the International Electrical Congress at St Louis' (Journ Inst Elect Eng, 1904); 'A High-Frequency Alternator ' (Phil Mag, 1905); 'Wireless Telegraphy Measurements' (Journ Inst Elect Eng, 1905, in conjunction with Mr J E Taylor); 'How to Improve Telephony' (Roy Inst Friday Discourse, 1906); 'Mesure des Courants Alternatifs' (Conference faite a l'Ecole Professionelle Superieure des Postes et Telegraphes, 1906). |
