TitleSpencer, William Kingdon: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionDate stamp on reverse. Citation typed
CitationDistinguished for his knowledge of fossil Starfishes. His 'Monograph of the Cretaceous Asteroidea' (1905-1908) gave a new weapon to stratigraphers of the Chalk, and was the basis of a suggestive memoir on the evolution of those fossils (Phil Trans, 1913). His 'Monograph of the British Palaeozoic Asterozoa' (1914 in progress), of fundamental importance to the morphology and classification of the class, is the fruit of most careful and ingenious study among its recent and fossil representatives, and is characterised by its brilliant and convincing explanations of their skeletal arrangements in terms of function.
