CitationDistinguished for contributions to the physics of solids and of liquids. Was the first to show conclusively that glasses are micro-crystalline, and the general ideas were extended to liquid metals, to polish on metals and to amorphous carbons. Has advanced largely knowledge of luminescence in solids. The function of impurities in phosphors has been elucidated and the physical principles of phosphorescence are now understood. The properties of thermoluminescent materials have been fully explained, and the general ideas correlated with existing theories of the solids state. Since war began has made important contributions to the generation of ultra-high frequency radio-waves.
