CitationDistinguished for his knowledge of radio-frequency spectroscopy of gases, and the Properties of Matter at Low Temperatures, especially of paramagnetic resonance. Was the first to measure by radio methods and explain quantitatively the inversion spectrum of ammonia, and to test by these means the theory of collusion broadening. Invented (with R. P. Penrose) the cavity resonator method of measuring short-wave absorption of gases. Was the first to apply microwave resonance methods at low temperatures to study of paramagnetic ions. Author of numerous papers on these topics in Proc. Roy. Soc., and Proc. Phys. Soc., as well as Trans. Farad. Soc., Physica, etc.
