Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Distinguished for his contributions to Organic chemistry and Biochemistry, with special reference to the carbohydrate components of micro-organisms and body tissues. He has played a prominent part in synthetic work on ascorbic acid and its analogues, chondrosamine, the uronic acids, disaccharides and deoxyribose. He is an authority on the classification and chemical structure of the mucoproteins and mucopolysaccharides and he has made major contributions to our knowledge of the polysaccharides of the causative agents of pneumonia, tuberculosis and typhoid. He has provided a logical interpretation of certain cytochemical reaction (e.g. Gram-staining, Dische-Feulgen, bacteriolysis) and his work on basic steroids opens up new prospects in chemotherapy. |
