TitleBlackman, Moses: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCertificate of Election
CitationDistinguished for his contributions to theory of crystal dynamics. Made the first detailed calculations of the vibrational spectra of two and three dimensional crystal lattices, and applied his results to the elucidation of discrepancies between observed specific heats and the Debye theory. Examined the possibility of a pseudo-T [to the power of] 3 region in the specific heats of solids and resolved an outstanding discrepancy between certain low temperature specific heat measurements and observed elastic constants. Made numerous contributions to the theory of electron diffraction by crystals, and also added significantly to the theory of dimagnetism in bismuth. In recent years he has devised a new method of observing magnetic transformations in ferromagnetic materials.
