Citation | Lionel Haworth is distinguished for his design of Rolls-Royce engines. His most famous engine is the Dart, of which more than 5,000 have been made and sold all over the world, for such famous aircraft as the Viscount, the Fokker Friendship (Dutch), the Namco YS11 (Japanese), the Grumman Gulf Stream (US), etc. He was also responsible for the original design of the Rolls-Royce Conway engine used in the R.A.F. Victor, Boeing 707, and the V.C.10. He was also responsible for the design of the Tyne engine used in the Vanguard, the CL.44 (Canadian), Transaal (Nord-Weser), and the Breguet Atlantique. Approximately 1,000 Tyne engines have been sold in Europe and Canada. He continues to work on the Rolls-Royce Pegasus engine for the Harrier, and the Olympus 593 for the Concorde. He is an expert on the properties of materials suitable for gas turbine engines. |
