CitationOur knowledge of the routes by which micro-organisms grown on reduced C1-compounds as sole carbon source stems largely from Quayle's work. He has elucidated three main modes of microbial C1 - assimilation. Pseudomonas oxalaticus was shown to use formate autotrophically but oxalate heterotrophically. Pseudomonas AM1, a new bacterial species isolated by Quayle, grows on a variety of C1-compunds, at oxidation levels from methanol to formate, by a novel cyclic sequence discovered by Quayle. In contrast, methane-utilizers grow by a ribulose monophosphate cycle of formaldehyde fixation also discovered by Quayle. Component enzymes of all these routes have been purified and meticulously characterized. Quayle's studies have greatly extended the field of methyltropic metabolism, and have found direct industrial application in the production of single-cell protein from methanol.
