CitationFormerly a partner in the firm of Ramsomes & May, Ipswich, Manufacturing Engineers. Local Secretary to the British Association in 1851. Distinguished for his acquaintance with the science of Mechanics and particularly as having successfully carried out the ideas of the Astronomer Royal, in the construction of the Altazimuth and Meridional Circle Instruments, in the Royal Observatory; also as the Inventor of recognized improvments in the construction of Permanent way of Railways, which have been adopted for the last twelve years, and are now in use upon upwards of two thousand miles of lines in Great Britain, are extensively used on the Continent, and are in course of general application on the East Indian lines now constructing.
