CitationDiscoverer of the fact, that in the absence of jacketing and superheating the saving by the highly expansive working of steam becomes nugatory (see Trans of the Institution of Engineers, in Scotland, 1857-8) : furnished the experimental data for, and was the first practically to apply, the discovery of a method of correctly estimating the speed and propelling power of proposed ships; (as to which, see Papers by Prof Rankine in Civil Engineers and Architects' Journal, October 1861; Philos Trans 1862; Trans of the Institution of Naval Architects 1864).
Author of various papers in the Trans of the Inst of Engineers of Scotland, the Trans of the Philosophical Society of Glasgow, the Reports of the British Association, and the Trans of Institution of Naval Architects; also one of the joint Authors of a treatise entitled "Shipbuilding, theoretical & practical", 1864-66.
Inventor of diagonal coordinates for recording and showing the errors of ships' compasses (see Admiralty Manual of Deviations of the Compass, 1862, page 15): - of a method of laying off the seams and butts of iron plating for ships - of normal framing for the bows of iron ships - of a machine for cutting angle-iron bars; - of eccentric-headed pins for shaping iron frames for ships - of various other machines and processes useful in iron-shipbuilding and marine engineering: - One of the Inventors of, and the first practically to use, the in-and-out method of plating the bottoms of iron ships, now universally used (Mr Scott Russell the other inventor). Distinguished for his acquaintance with Mechanics, the Science of Naval Architecture, and Magnetism, especially as applied to ships' compasses.
Professionally eminent as a Shipbuilder and Engineer.
Attached to Science and anxious to promote its progress; (being Past President and one of the Founders of the Institution of Engineers in Scotland; one of the Founders and a Member of Council of the Institution of Naval Architects; and a Member of the British Association, long acting on the Committee on Steam-Ship Performance, and now on the Committee on the Resistance of Water to floating and immersed bodies).
