TitleParsons, Robert Mann: certificate of election to the Royal Society
CitationHas had long experience in Astronomical Geography, was for 5 years in charge of the Engineer Survey in British Columbia during which time he surveyed about 1000 miles of Forest and Prairie tracks based on Astronomical observations, with a view to the construction of roads, bridges, settlements, &c.
Cooperated with the Hydrographical Survey then in progress, under the present Hydrographer of the Admiralty, and in concert with the officers of that Survey observed and made drawings of the total Eclipse of 18th July, 1860 - which were communicated to the Astronomer Royal. Was reported by the Governor of the Colony to the Secty of State, 13th Nov 1863 as having in the higher branches of Science rendered good service to the Colony. Was for 3 years Instructor in Chemistry, Electricity, and Telegraphy at the School of Military Engineering, Chatham, which he left to assume his present position at the Headquarters of the Ordnance Survey under Sir Henry James FRS. Is attached to science, and anxious to promote its progress.
