Author of a memoir on the Indian Surveys. Traveller and explorer in S America East of the Peruvian Andes, in 1852-4 and again in 1860-1 of which accounts are published in his "Cuzco and Lima" and
"Travels in Peru, &c". Translator and editor of 8 important works bearing on ancient American civilization, two of which are from old Spanish MSS at Madrid, and one from a Quichua MS at Cuzco; also translator and Editor, with notes and introduction, of the "Spanish Embassy to the Court of Timour in 1400"; also author of a grammar and dictionary of Quichua, the language of the Incas. Introducer of the cultivation of quinine yielding Cinchona plants into India. He is distinguished for his knowledge of modern and early geography and he has shown himself most desirous to promote that science, in his capacity of Honorary Secretary to the R Geographical Society from 1863 to the present time, also of the Hakluyt Society from 1858, and as Geographer to the Abyssinian Field Force 1867-68.
