CitationGeorge Strong Nares.
Was attached to the Arctic Expedition of 1852-3-4 in search of Franklin. Was for some years employed as Commander of HMS Salamander in exploring the Great Barrier reefs of Australia. Commanded HM ships "Newport" and "Shearwater" on the Nautical Survey of the Mediterranean, the Gulf of Suez, and Red Sea and in the latter named ship in conjunction with Dr Carpenter was engaged in deep sea researches, and in the investigation of the Gibraltar Strait Currents, on which he wrote a paper which was published in the Proceedings of the Royal Society. Was selected to Command HMS Challenger on the present voyage of scientific discovery, and has written a paper on the soundings, temperatures &c of the Atlantic Ocean which was also printed in the Proceedings. He has likewise made several reports on the results of the 'Challenger' voyage in the Atlantic and Antarctic Oceans, which have been presented to the Royal Society. Is attached to Science and anxious to promote its progress
