CitationDistinguished for his acquaintance with the Science of Physiology and particularly for his investigations on the innervation of the Heart and Blood-vessels, which have led (1) to the discovery that muscle regulates its own supply of blood according to its activity, that the small arteries of muscle dilate when its nerve is stimulated and that the tonicity of the arteries and of the Heart is in part dependent on the degree of alkalinity of the liquid in contact with their muscular fibres, and (2) to a more exact knowledge of the way in which the vagus nerve acts upon the Heart : Author of various papers published in the Proceedings of the Royal Society, in the Journal of Physiology & Ludwig's Arbeiten.
