Was appointed by the President & Council of the Royal Society to accompany the "Transit of Venus" Expedition to the Island of Rodriguez & was author of a general account of that Island, & a detailed one of its Flora, published in the "Philosophical Transactions". Undertook in 1881 an Exploration of the Island of Socotra, the Botany of which he has prepared for publication in the Transactions of the Royal Society of Edinburgh.
