Entered the Royal Engineers in 1857, From 1867 to 1870 was in charge of the Explorations in Palestine, Made a Reconnaissance of Philistia, Jordan Valley, and Gilead, Excavated the Mounds of Jericho, the Noble Sanctuary of Jerusalem &c.
In 1876 was appointed Special Commissioner to Survey and lay down the boundary line between the Orange Free State and Griqualand West, In 1877 travelled through the Transvaal & Native Territory to Delagoa Bay and was Appointed Special Commissioner to Enquire into and settle the Land Question in Griqualand West, and Subsequently was appointed Commissioner to Enquire into the Western boundary of the Transvaal and Keats Award.
In 1879 appointed A Administrator and Com in Chief of Griqualand West.

"The Temple or the Tomb" 8vo 1880
"Orientation of Ancient Temples" 8vo 1876 and of Various reports on the Boundary line and Land Question of Griqualand, on Native Questions in South Africa, also joint author of "Recovery of Jerusalem," & "Our Work in Palestine"
