DescriptionList of papers written on reverse of certificate
CitationIs distinguished as a chemist and Metallurgical Engineer. He was the first to make pure steel from phosphoric pig iron in a Bessemer Converter lined with basic materials; a discovery of national importance, for which he was, in 1883, awarded the Bessemer gold medal of the Iron and Steel Institute.
He has developed points of much scientific interest in connection with the mode of existence of carbon and silicon in iron and steel, and has specially studied the liquation of fluid bodies during the solidification of steel. He has also conducted important researches on the relation between the chemical composition and mechanical properties of steel used for rails.
Is the author of the following papers
1. On the Condition of Carbon & Silicon in Iron and Steel.
2. On the Composition of the Gases evolved from the Bessemer Converter.
3. On the Scientific features of the Dank's Puddling Furnace.
4. On the Manufacture and Use of Spiegeleisen.
5. On Fire-Clay and other Refractory Materials
6. On the Direct process of steel making.
7. On the removal of Phosphorus & Sulphur in the Bessemer process.
8. On the distribution of Elements in Steel Ingots.
9. On the chemical composition and testing of steel rails.
