| Citation | Has actively promoted Scientific interests in the North of Ireland. Contributed to Phil Mag and Proc Roy Soc a series of papers describing experiments with special apparatus on the Potential-difference observable when dissimilar substances are in contact in air or other gas, and discussing the theory of voltaic action. The following is an epitome: - Phil Mag, 1878, Reversal of Deflection over Copper-iron divided Ring when H2S replaces Air; ibid, 1879, Extension of this Result. Proc Roy Soc, 1886, Improved Apparatus and Measurements; Reversal with Ammonia; Current from Parallel Plates at small distance in Air; Distance of Maximium Effect; Variation of Gassiot Experiment; Appendix with Deductions. Phil Mag, 1890, Experiments on the Electrification of an Insulated Vessel from which Effluvia are given off by Chemical Action, and on the Electrification of the Effluvia; ibid, 1891, Experiments to decide whether the EMF of a Cell is influenced by the Chemical attractions of the Cation for the Anode and Cathode; ibid, 1892, Experiments on the Potential-difference at the Contact of Mutually Acting Liquids. Proc Roy Soc, 1892, Experiments with Cells in which Fused Salts take the place of Aqueous Solutions, and comparison of EMF with Heat of Combination. As a member of the BA Electrolysis Committee, contributed papers which appear in Phil Mag, 1889 and 1892, on Helmholtz's Theory of Mercury-dropping Electrodes, and on Clausius' Theory of Electrolytic Conduction. Published in Phil Mag, 1888, the first discovery of the figures produced on a photographic dry-plate by electric discharge alon gits surface, and in Belfast Nat and Phil Soc Proc, 1882, Experiments on increasing the supply of Carbonic Acid to Plants. |
