CitationCaptain, Royal Engineers (retired). Director-General , Survey Department of Egypt. In the corps of the Royal Engineers from 1884 to 1901, when he retired to continue in charge of the survey of Egypt. Distinguished as a scientific administrator and for his contributions to science. Charged (1895) with examination of stability of foundation of Temples of Philae; Geological Survey organized (1896); took over Revenue Survey, and organized Department for Cadastral, Topographical, and Geological Surveys (1898); reorganized Khedivial Observatory (1899); established Meteorological Service of Egypt and Sudan (1900), twelve meteorological stations and sixty rainfall stations up to frontier of Uganda, now in operation; commenced systematic Hydrographic Survey of Nile (1904); preparatory work for Geodetic Arc of Meridian along the Nile Valley. Author of (1905): - 'London Clay and Bagshot Beds' (Quart Journ Geol Soc, 1887); 'Bagshot Beds and their Stratigraphy' (ibid, 1889); 'Stratigraphy and Physiography of Libyan Desert' (ibid, 1894); 'Geology of part of Nubian Desert' (ibid, 1897); 'Western Oases of Kharga and Dakhla' (Khedivial Geog Soc, Cairo, 1893); 'Magnetic Observations in Egypt, 1893-1901' (Proc Roy Soc, 1901); 'Variations of Atmosphere Pressure in NE Africa and the Nile Flood' (ibid, 1905); 'The Nile Flood and its Variations' (Geog Journ, 1905); 'Article 'Geography and Statistics of Egypt' (Encyclopedia Britannica). Egyptian Official Publications: - 'Islands and Temples of Philae' (Public Works Ministry, 1896); 'Variation of Level of Victoria Nyanza'(ibid, 1904); 'Rains of the Nile Basin in 1904' (Survey Dept, 1905); 'Hydrography of Nile Basin' (ibid, February, 1906).
