CitationEx-Staff of the Geological Survey. Distinguished for his researches on the Cretaceous Rocks. Author of Memoir on the Cretaceous Rocks of Britain, 3 vols (1900-1904), and part author of Memoirs on the Geology of Cambridgeshire, Lincolnshire, and Norfolk. Author of papers in the Quart Journ Geol Soc on the Cambridge Gault and Greensand, the Glacial Drift and River-Valleys of Lincolnshire, the Coral Rocks and Oceanic deposits of Barbados, the origin of the Clay-with-flints, &c. Also of many papers in the Geological Magazine, and other journals. Author of the 'Building of the British Isles' (second edition, 1892), and other books. Was awarded the Sedgwick Prize for Essay on the Post Tertiary Deposits of Cambridgeshire (1878), and the Murchison Medal by the Council of the Geological Society (1901).
