TitleDixey, Frederick Augustus: certificate of election to the Royal Society
CitationWills Medical Fellow, Lecturer in Physiology and in Medical Subjects, and Bursar, Wadham College, Oxford. A distinguished student of the Phylogeny and Bionomics of Rhopalocera. Discoverer of Reciprocal Mimicry (Diaposematism), and Secondary Mimicry between the co-mimics of a single model. The first to show that the Pierine 'mimics' of Heliconidae are in certain respects actually copied by their models. Author of the following memoirs: - 'Insect Phylogeny' and 'Bionomics': 'On the Phylogenetic Significance of the Wing-markings in certain Genera of the Nymphalidae' (Trans Entom Soc, Lond, 1890); 'On the Phylogentic Significance of Temperature-Variations in 'Vanessa atalanta'' (ibid, 1893); 'On the Phylogeny of the Pierinae,' ibid, 1894 - (Mimicry of Pierinae by other groups; discovery of Reciprocal Assimilation (Diaposematism); female mimicry extended to Mullerian associations); 'On Temperature-Variation and Heredity' (ibid, 1896); 'On the Relation of Mimetic Patterns to the Original Form,' ibid, 1896 - (discovery of secondary mimicry; Fritz Muller's principle shown to be far more widely effective than Bates'); 'On Mimetic Attraction,' ibid, 1897 - (confirms and extends conclusions of earlier papers); 'On Seasonal Dimorphism in Butterflies' (ibid, 1902). Among shorter communications in the Proceedings of the Entomological Society are: 'On Seasonal Dimorphism in Neotrophical Lepidoptera,' 1898 - (first announcement of the occurrence of this phenomenon in South America); 'On the Scents of Male Rhopalocera, mostly Pierinae,' 1904 - (first detection and discussion of epigamic scents in many native species); 'On the Bionomic Significamce of Forms of Crenis, Pinacopteryx and Teracolus bred by Mr Marshall,' 1905; 'Epigamic Scents in South African Butterflies,' 1905 - (first detection of these scents in African species; discussion of their bionomic significance); 'On Wet- and Dry- season Forms of South African Pierine Butterflies,' 1905; 'On Geographical and Seasonal Variation in South African Danaine, Satyrine, Nymphaline, Acraeine and Papilionine Butterflies,' 1906; 'On the Reddish Coloration of Dry-season Forms of Pierine Butterflies in Asia, Africa and America; its Bionomic Significance,' 1906; - 'On Mimicry by the Pierine genera Eronia, Nepheronia, and Leuceronia,' 1906. Among Faunistic and Systematic memoirs is a discussion of Geographical and Seasonal Forms in the genus Byblia (Proc Zool Soc, 1898), and of Seasonal in relation to Sexual Dimorphism (Trans Entom Soc, 1903). Many other memoirs on insects, but not bearing upon Phylogeny or Bionomics, are omitted from the above list. 'Mammalian Histology': 'On the Ossification of the Terminal Phalanges and the Relation of the Ungal Corium to the Periosteum of the Phalanx' (Proc Roy Soc, 1880 and 1893); 'On the Epidermis of the Plantar Surface and the Question of Use-Iheritance.' (Brit Assoc Rept, 1894). 'Vital Statistics': 'Epidemic Influenza' (Clarendon Press, 1892, and Brit Med Journ, 1892); 'Diptheria in London' (Brit Med Journ, 1895, 1896, 1898); 'Enteric Fever' (ibid, 1901).
