CitationProfessor of Organic Chemistry in the University of Leeds. Distinguished as an author and investigator in organic chemistry. Author of numerous papers published in the Journal of the Chemical Society, the Berichte of the German Chemical Society, and in the Journal of the Society of Chemical Industry, mostly in conjunction with his pupils. The following are some chief publcations: - 'Ueber beta-Methylumbelliferon' (1884); 'Action of Alkali Hydroxides and Alcoholates on Amides' (two papers, 1896-1897); 'Action of Nitrogentrioxide and Tetroxide on Alcohols' (four papers, 1896); 'On the Progressive Chlorination of Benzene and Toluene in the Presence of the Aluminium-Mercury Couple' (five papers, 1902-1906); 'The Chlorination of Toluene' (two papers, 1905-1910); 'The Relation of Position Isomerism to Optical Activity' (eight papers, 1903-1910); 'The Reduction of Nitrocompounds by Hydrogen Sulphide and the Mechanism of the Reaction' (three papers, 1902-1905); 'The Influence of Substitution in the Nucleus on the Rate of Oxidation of the Side Chain' (three papers, 1904-1907); 'Experiments on the Production of Optically Active Compounds from Inactive Substances' (1901); 'The Constitution of the Products of Nitration of Aceto-'m'-toluidide' (1902); 'The Constitution of the Amidines' (1910). Prof Cohen has also made important investigations on 'Town Air' (published by the Smithsonian Institution), and on the 'Combustion of Coal and Gaseous Fuel' (Society of Chemical Industry, 1894, 1896, and 1897). He is the author of standard text-books on Organic Chemistry.
