TitleMinchin, Edward Alfred: certificate of election to the Royal Society
CitationProfessor of Protozoology in the University of London. Late Jodrell Professor of Zoology in University College, London. Late Fellow of Merton College, Oxford. Distinguished for his knowledge of Zoology and for his zoological investigations, particularly on invertebrates. Was selected by a Committee of the Royal Society to investigate the relation of Sleeping Sickness to the Tsetse-fly, in Uganda; has published in the Proceedings of the Royal Society, as the preliminary results of these investigations, ''Glossina palpalis' in its relation to 'Trypanosoma gambiense' and other Trypanosomes' (with Lieuts Gray and Tulloch), in which it is shown that the method of infection by the fly is a direct mechanical one, that 'Trypanosoma gambiense' of Sleeping Sickness does not go through a development cycle in the fly, and that the fly carries two other species of Trypanosome. Also, 'On the Cycle Occurrence of Encystation in 'Trypanosoma grayi' (Novy), with remarks on the Method of Infection by Trypanosomes generally,' in which it is shown that one of the Trypanosomes carried by the fly becomes encysted in the rectum, and it is suggested that in Trypanosomes the cyclical method of infection (as distinct from the direct mechanical mode) may be contaminative and not of the inoculative type hitherto assumed by all investigators; 'A Report on the Anatomy of 'Glossina palpalis.'' Author of a series of memoirs on the development of the spicules of Calcareous Sponges (Quart Journ Micros Sci, 1896-1904), and of many other zoological memoirs, chiefly on Sponges and Protozoa, in some of which he has been associated with Drs Woodcock, Woodland, and other pupils, trained by himself. Author of a treatise on the Sporozoa and on the Sponges.
