DescriptionDate stamp on reverse
CitationProfessor of Engineering in the Central Technical College, London; Ex-Professor of Engineering and Applied Mathematics at Finsbury Technical College, and Demonstrator in Mechanical Science in the University of Cambridge. Distinguished for his scientific investigations of engineering subjects, especially the action of internal combustion motors and the dynamics of engines. Has made a special study of the balancing of engines, in which he introduced a vector method of great convenience, and has exhaustively treated the subject in his 'Treatise on the Balancing of Engines' (1902), based on methods published by him in earlier papers. From 1903-1906 acted as Honorary Secretary to a Committee of the Institution of Civil Engineers on Internal Combustion Engines, and was largely responsible for the experimental work and for the conclusions reached in the reports. Author also of a 'Treatise on Valves and Valve-gear Mechanisms' (1905), containing much original application of kinematical and dynamical principles to the action of valve-gears. His method, published jointly with Prof Callendar' (Proc Roy Soc, 1907), of measuring temperatures in the cylinder of a gas-engine has opened up new means of research in that subject. Other papers are: - 'A New Transmission Dynamometer' (Proc Inst CE, 1898); 'On the Balancing of Engines' (Trans Inst Nav Arch, 1899); 'The Distribution of Strain in a Flat Bar' (ibid, 1898); 'A Comparision of Types of Engines' (ibid, 1902); 'Vibration Problems in Engineering Science' (Proc Roy Inst, 1903); 'The Economical Working of Locomotives' (Proc Inst CE, 1906); 'Heat Transmission' (Proc Inst ME, 1909); 'On the Direct Measurement of the Air Supply to an Internal Combustion Engine' (Brit Assoc, 1910); Presidential Address to Section G (Brit Assoc, 1910).
