In 1902 he was appointed joint commissioner with Dr Tempest Anderson to study the volcanic phenomena of the Soufriere and Mont Pele. Joint author with Dr Anderson of 'Report on the Eruptions of the Soufriere in St Vincent in 1902' (Phil Trans, Ser A, vol cc). Author of Petrological Notes on the Products of the Eruptions of May, 1902, at the Soufriere in St Vincent' (ibid, vol ccviii). When Assistant in the Geological Department of the Edinburgh University he contributed the following papers: - 'The Trap Dykes of the Orkneys' (Trans Roy Soc Edin, 1900); 'The Old Red Sandstone of the Orkneys' (ibid, 1899); 'A Hypersthene Andesite from Dumyat Ochils' (Trans Edin Geol Soc, 1897); 'Phenocrysts of Micropegmatite' (ibid, 1898); 'The Age of the Old Red Sandstone of Shetland' (Trans Roy Soc Edin, vol xlvi). Since 1901 he has furnished Petrological Descriptions to various Geological Survey Memoirs, of which the following may be mentioned: - Lower Strathspey (1902); Blair Atholl, Pitlochry,and Aberfeldy (1905); Mid-Argyll (1905); Falmouth and Camborne (1906); Isles of Scilly (1906); New Quay (1906); Lands End (1907); ; Plymouth and Liskeard (1907); Oban and Dalmally (1908); Bodmin and St Austell (1909); Seaboard of Mid-Argyll (1909); Padstow and Camelford (1910); The Neighbourhood of Edinburgh (1910).
